My work in school mental health promotion is through the Canadian Association for School Health. Our activities in promoting mental health through schools has included:

The issues of immediate concern to me and my work in schools and mental health are:

  • how can we promote comprehensive and coordinated approaches to school mental health while recognizing the constraints faced by schools and mental health professionals/agencies?
  • how can we encourage national strategies such as the Mental Health Commission and the Anti-Drug Strategy to work together on common issues (eg school shootings) and synergistic programs (eg Strengthening Families Progams)?

I have a non profit dedicated to working with Youth with Invisible Disabilities....www.fearlesslearning.com
Our projects are with school districts. Is anyone amazed at how little focus is placed upon Mental Illness in our Canadian school system.
Just for instance, 25%of ALL families experience a serious mental illness. So, given every student has at least one friend, that makes 50% of the student population aware and impacted. Also, did you know that only 1 in 6 teens with serious mental illnessess ever get professional help.
So, anyone interested in this would welcome their feedback.
